Finding Business News

If you read the last post you probably have tried the http://www.referenceusa.com/ database and found some businesses you want to target.

You have the names of business owners, managers, marketing executives, purchasing agents, etc.

But you are sure that knowing something about the businesses or persons would be even more useful.

The Problem

So where can you find more information about a person or business?  Of course typing their name into a search engine will yield their web site and other places they are mentioned—so do that first.

But ( this is a big but ) do one of two things:

  • type the name with quotes (i.e. “Penelope Smith” or “Acme Business Corporation”) or
  • use the advanced search options and select the exact words option.

Otherwise you will get a clutter of hits.  Do go to the company’s website and look around. You might get some great ideas about how to approach them.

Newspaper Indexes

But where else can you look?

The possibilities are almost endless, and you will have to prioritize so that you don’t get on that endless road and never get to the end.  (See the King of Hearts in my first post.) To Infinity and Beyond!

The first place to look would be in newspapers.  If you are looking for local businesses, always check the local business newspapers.  Most are published by The Business Journals; a list can be found at http://www.bizjournals.com/.  If you want to make sure to find everything, do search all of their journals at once at the home web site.  Local general newspapers are always useful as well—don’t forget to search the archives.

This is when you again visit the library online databases.  Most have several newspaper indexes.  These indices are always more useful than just searching newspaper websites because they are tabulated by professional indexers.

Even though you want to find information as soon as you can, take a minute to look at the options that your library offers and select the ones that you think might be useful.

NewsBank covers local papers and transcripts of local television news.  This system allows you to select the sources that you want to look at so you don’t have hits from newspapers you don’t need.   NewsBank also covers lots of business news journals.

Regional Business News (Ebsco) is another useful index. It allows searches in the full text of articles and you can specify for photos. Ebsco also publishes Newspaper Source, where you can select what sources you want to look at by clicking on Search Options

Headline Spot ( www.headlinespot.com ) is a content aggregator that has links to numerous newspapers, newswires, television and radio. Users can select for local news, subject  ( i.e. environment, technology ), news photos, and even podcasts.  ( Oh, to have the time to listen to BBC news on podcasts! )

News Alerts

Keeping current on a client or competitor is facilitated by signing up for news alerts.  Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

The Google Alert signup is under the more menu—even more.   Select the sources you want and the frequency of your updates.  Bing also has a news alert system.

If you use Outlook you can set up rules so that every email containing the name of your target will be funneled to a separate folder.  In this way you won’t be overwhelmed by so many emails.

If your target has one, sign up for a newsletter or press release service.  These too can be funneled to the separate folder.
